Skiing

It goes without saying, that when you book a ski holiday, you’ll be looking for a base that is ideally located for the slopes, but perhaps Morzine has a more enviable position than most. This village in the Haute Savoie region of France, lies in the massive Portes Du Soleil Ski Area, one of the largest linked ski areas in the Alps.

The Portes Du Soleil Ski Area houses 3 notable ski resorts: Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz, which together provide 650km of pistes. The French/Swiss Mountains have 140 easy runs, 100 runs for intermediate skiers, and 26 difficult runs, so there is something for everyone. The easy runs tend to be wide and gentle, while the terrain is more varied for intermediate skiers. The harder runs, such as the ‘Swiss Wall’ and ‘Ladies World Cup’, are perhaps the most famous in this area.

Along with the 650km of pistes, you’ll also find varied off piste skiing, and cross country skiing as well. Portes Du Soleil has 243km of cross country skiing in total, with 48km of that in Morzine, and a further 48km in Avoriaz. Snowboarders haven’t been forgotten either, with 9 snowparks and a variety of other areas suitable for boarders.

If this all sounds a bit baffling, and you’re a first time, or inexperienced skier, then have no fear, there are full programs of tuition available to suit all abilities. First time skiers can book a full 6 day package of tuition, while more experienced skiers can opt for either morning or afternoon sessions, with additional time on the slopes. There are packages available for young children, older children, and adults, with equipment hire included or available as an addition if needed.

The final thing to consider is a lift pass, a necessary purchase, but one where budgets may come into play. There are lift passes available that cover the whole of Portes Du Soleil, just Avoriaz, or the Morzine/Les gets area. Which one you choose will depend on budgets, your ski experience, and how much skiing you’ll be doing during your holiday. Have no fear though, however you decide to spend your ski holiday, there’s no danger of being bored when you ski in Morzine.
